Academic Decline

The adolescent years are a significant life stage that may herald a range of new challenges. As adolescents commence the transition into adulthood, they develop physical and emotional maturity by exploring their sense of self in the world. In this whole new transitional phase, they may face certain difficulties in different domains of their life, academics being one of them.

Adolescents may face academic concerns, such as learning difficulties or disabilities, underachievement, lack of attention from teachers, being unable to understand the content, balancing their study time, lacking motivation for studies, easy distractibility, difficulty in concentration, lack of right resources, etc. Academic issues do not just influence an adolescent's performance in the classroom negatively, but are also likely to have a significant negative effect on other areas of life, often placing undue stress on an adolescent and interfering with home, school and social domains.

Parents have a very important role to play during the adolescent years of a child's life, as it is the developmental phase and lays the foundation for a positive and healthy adulthood. They can play a vital role in helping adolescents succeed in school by being informed and lending support and guidance. The following techniques may be helpful for parents to deal with the adolescent's academic issues.

1.Talking about the academic pressures and listening with the intention of understanding, not responding and judging.
2.Being vigilant about what could be causing most amount of stress in the adolescent's life, academic problems, or something related with other aspects, such as peer relationships, buying, etc.
3.Teaching effective time management strategies and skills.
4.Cultivating the practice of yoga and mindfulness, and relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, stretching, walking, or art based activities.
5.Encouraging the adolescent to communicate with the teachers and counsellors at the school, and simultaneously being in touch with the school authorities.
6.Spending quality time with the adolescents and engaging in activities of their choice.
7.Seeking guidance from experts can help in identification of problem areas and adequate remediation, which will not only improve academics, but an adolescent's overall personality.
