Concentration Problems

"Whenever I sit to study, I get drifted away with thoughts that come and distract me", a statement that is often heard from school going adolescents. Adolescence is a period of rapid physical changes as well as emotional ups and downs. During this phase, adolescents may encounter various distractions that lead to decreased levels of concentration and interest.

Lack of concentration in adolescents may have various underlying causes, such as:

  1. Technological advancements: Gadgets not only make our work easy & comfortable, but can also lead one to become dependent on them. Use of some gadgets has also proven to be addictive, especially in teenage and young adulthood. Gadgets that are stimulating may pressurize adolescents to stay updated and distracted and hence, causing to be detrimental to one's concentration levels.
  2. Sleep Deprivation
  3. Poor nutritionand eating habits
  4. Anxiety and stress related to academics, peer pressure or family issues
  5. Health Concerns

Parents may follow certain techniques to improve concentration in their adolescents.

  • Promoting a healthy lifestyle and diet; food rich in nutrients may help the adolescent's brain to function effectively thereby, improving the concentration.
  • Limiting use of electronic devices
  • Encouraging adolescents to exercise daily and to maintain a healthy routine, both physically and mentally.
  • Praising and appreciating more, enhancing self-confidence and motivation.
  • Facilitating a distraction free and positive environment.
  • Encouragingthe adolescents to use free time to play some memory games or concentration boosting activities.
  • Seeking help from trained professionals to help assess other causal factors that may be contributing to a hampered concentration, and to get adequate training on the same, using techniques like mindfulness, concentration and working memory enhancing computer based programmes, etc.

Helping the adolescents in improving their concentration will boost their performance at school, day to day work and even in relationships with family and friends.
