Personality Development Guidance

Adolescent years are a time of major transition from being a child to a young adult. In this phase many adolescents tend to develop concerns about the changing size, weight and shape. Also, adolescents begin to develop unique personality traits that affect their emotional and social behaviors.

Personality plays an important role in shaping an individual and differs from adolescent to adolescent. It helps an adolescent to inculcate positive qualities like punctuality, flexible attitude, willingness to learn, friendly nature, eagerness to help others and so on.

As adolescents slowly develop a clear sense of identity, parents can play an important role in shaping a healthy personality development by understanding the various changes that their growing child is experiencing. Parents can play an important role in molding an adolescent's personality towards becoming a physically, mentally and emotionally healthy adult. Parental behaviours that can facilitate the development of a healthy personality include:

1.Keeping communication open by discussing things openly with their adolescents.
2.Encouraging adolescents to participate and volunteer at events in school and residential society, and also hone their extracurricular interests like sports, arts, music, etc.
3.Complimenting the adolescent and celebrating his/her efforts and accomplishments.
4.Showing affection and spending quality time together doing things they enjoy.
5.Parents own personality impacts that of the children; being a good role model significantly enhances the child's personality development.
6.Parents must help their teenage children to use their own judgment, make decisions, while being there for giving advice when required and encouraging the ability to resolve conflicts independently.
7.Parents can encourage healthy habits in their adolescents by encouraging them to eat healthy, get sufficient exercise and sleep, and use digital media within safe limits. A healthy and well-groomed body always impacts one's personality in a positive manner.
8.Seeking help from experts and professionals may also have a great impact on the development of a positive personality in adolescents.

Personality development influences how an adolescent views life and handles life experiences. It helps an adolescent to grow into a positive, responsible adult and also helps in maintaining stable and healthy relationships with others.
